I want to query a criminal conviction

Have you been convicted of a crime that you did not commit?
Have you exhausted all avenues of appeal through the courts?

If yes to both, please see the options below.

I do not have a solicitor or Criminal Appeals Project working on my case

BPP Criminal Appeals Project (CAP)

This project helps those with criminal convictions, maintaining their innocence, who wish to apply to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) for a review of their case.

Our team of student volunteers, under the supervision of a qualified solicitor or barrister, review case files and assess whether there is new evidence or a fresh legal argument which could justify a CCRC application.

Please note the following:

This project can only assist you once you have exhausted the appeals process (i.e. you must already have appealed to the Criminal Court of Appeal). Furthermore, we are only able to take on cases where our students have capacity.

Please be aware that an appeal to the CCRC is a very slow process and is likely to take several years.

The BPP CAP team will require a client’s full authority to access all papers relating to their case. As law students, the BPP CAP team cannot write to clients confidentially under Rule 39A, in the way that practicing lawyers can.

If you already have a solicitor or a University Criminal Appeals Project working on your case, please refer back to your existing legal team. We cannot offer supplementary advice or a second opinion.

If you would like your case to be considered please email probono@bpp.com or leedsprobono@bpp.com.
